The Guru

Sri Dharma Mittra
Sri Dharma Mittra has dedicated his life to the service of humanity, sharing the timeless wisdom of yoga as a path to health, peace, and spiritual awakening. Born in 1939 in Pirapora, Brazil, he discovered yoga in his youth through books, long before it became a global trend, and later traveled to New York City to meet his Guru, Sri Swami Kailashananda, beginning a lifelong journey of study, practice, and teaching.
Initiated as a Sannyasi, Sri Dharma devoted years to Karma Yoga and served his Guru directly before beginning to teach. In 1975, he founded the Yoga Asana Center, now the Dharma Yoga Center, becoming one of the first independent teachers on the East Coast and guiding hundreds of thousands of students in traditional yoga. Known as a “Teachers’ Teacher,” he continues to welcome all who seek guidance, teaching almost daily for over fifty years.
In 1984, he created the Master Yoga Chart of 908 Postures, a monumental work of over 1,350 photographs, many of which were born from his own inspired creativity. He is also the author of ASANAS: 608 Yoga Poses, The Life of a Yogi Teachers’ Manual, Yoga Wisdom, and has been featured in American Yoga. His Maha Sadhana DVD series preserves decades of teaching, offering Asana, Pranayama, Kirtan, and spiritual guidance.
Gentle, radiant, and selfless, Sri Dharma embodies the teachings he imparts, living yoga through devotion, humility, and the desire to uplift all who come to his door.
